Bear Moon Spirits borrows its name from the lore of several Native American nations across the Midwest from Mkokisis to the Potawatomi clan of the Great Lakes, to Hujwiconin to the Winnebago people further south, and the Osage tribes whose word for the celestial body Hahewira means “night luminary.” As one of the brightest moons on the calendar, a Bear Moon occurs just shy of the first full moon of the new year and is so dubbed due to the preference of many bears to give birth to cubs in January, partway through their annual hibernations.
